How much do I love Rachel Ryle’s work… let me count the ways. Beautiful and cheerful animation coupled with tiny tales that have to be watched over and over.
Follow Rachel’s work on her website, Facebook, Instagram or on Twitter.

Coffee anyone? I love making my own coffee at home in my caffettiera… but this is so much more beautiful than when I do it… got milk?

These quirky animations are full of magic… Abracadabra!

I adore the play on scale and the cross over between the 2D & 3D realms… Are you feeling lucky punk?

A little playful sandcastle fun just in time for Summer (in the southern hemisphere that is)… however, I’ve never been able to disassociate the song Mr Sandman by The Chordettes from Halloween II… still creeps me out LOL!

vision of greatness… some inspiration for satsumas

vision of greatness… some inspiration for satsumas

I recently did a commission for Satsumas – a data company that helps clients get easy access to their information. They wanted to adapt an old + daggy low res image into a bright and inspirational poster for their staff… “Vision Of Greatness”

Vision of Greatness copy

It’s so nice to get great feedback from clients and photos of your work in situ… this is how it looks in their North Sydney office.

I got it printed at Pronto Print in Neutral Bay and they were great – very professional and fast – they did a marvellous job with the block mounting too.

Get in touch if you have a vision of greatness you need to turn into an inspirational poster 😛

Sebastien Tellier is a French multi-instrumentalist who sings in English + French + Italian. If you don’t already love him… I think you will. I particularly adore this clip… do yourself a favour and get lost in the illustrated fantasy land where clothing is clearly not allowed.

Sebastian-tellier-love

The animation is by Sébastien Eballard + Ruben Sellem + Frédéric Venet and is breathtakingly beautiful. I love the colours, the characters and the trippy storyline. If only all of my dreams were drawn in this style and were as peaceful and meditative.

just paint… fuck the world (NSFW)

My mother said this once and it stuck – I wrote it down and it stayed with me. I just have to find a way to practice thia philosophy more. At times it is very difficult to turn off the mean inner critic in all of our heads (easier for some than others).

Just paint fuck the worldSo put down the remote + put down your smartphone and JUST PAINT… xo

Even a cloudy day is beautiful in Sydney but these Spring days are super sparkly and extra gorgeous. I spied on these swimmers last Saturday after trekking Sculptures by the Sea. I envy their ability to soak up the sun.

The sea pool at Bondi Icebergs is more than just a Sydney icon… it’s an awesome place to hang out and soak up some rays.

Speaking of rays and soaking up the sun… never forget to be sun safe and this message from 1980 is still relevant today… Slip Slop Slap!

I always talk to strangers and often meet really interesting people and have amazing conversations 🙂 I recently had a great discussion with Sara Roberts – a Sydney based artist – at the MCA at Circular Quay. Despite being a lovely person, when I gooogled her work I was happy to see that I also love her work.

She has a very clean modern style with bright + flat areas of colour (I LOVE THIS) and her colours are bright and clean. Just lovely.

in a nutshell… everything you need to know about planet earth

in a nutshell… everything you need to know about planet earth

This gorgeous video combines a bunch of science with beautiful flat design (all the rage right now).

Kurzgesagt is an AWESOME youtube channel and their German name literally means “in a nutshell”. They are a group of designers, journalists and musicians on a mission to make science beautiful, producing videos explaining things like space, time and evolution. Basically they are flipping awesome and you should sit down with a cup of [insert preferred beverage here] and binge watch the lot.

These illustrations are just so beautiful and simple. Often it’s much harder to simplify an image rather than get caught up in the detail – the minimalist artists dilemma.

Back when I was studying science I was appalled by the boring way information was communicated, but in the last five or so years the tables have turned. Access to technology has opened up the door for wonderful creative people to share science with us all.

According to Wikipedia the definition of a scientist is “A scientist, in a broad sense, is one engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge” therefore, anyone who has a hunger for knowledge is indeed a scientist.

you can do more than you think you can

you can do more than you think you can

I have to remind myself of this almost daily! Just push through and do more regardless of what it is you’re doing – art, writing, exercise, work, modern interpretive dance or partying.

Often the biggest challenge to creatives is battling their inner critic – regardless of what your inner critic says, you CAN do more than you think you can.

i’m a hot little potato right now – mugatu, zoolander

Got to love the fashion mogul and Derek Zoolander’s model agent Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) in Zoolander (2001)… so many great lines and such a great (no stupid – no great) movie.

Life is too short to be serious all the time.

You can find all sorts of amazing artists while searching the wonderful world of the internet… I love Jennifer Tyers landscapes so much. There is a beautiful childish simplicity in the large blocks of colour and the simplification and almost illustration like. They also remind me of the beautiful water colours my beautiful late Aunty Carmiña did in the 50’s.

This image is from her 2013 collection called Double Dipper. She made these works while she was on a residency in Byron Bay.

This work is also from her 2013 collection called Double Dipper. I love the way she simplifies the trees as if to reference the Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Tropical Garden

I adore the brightness creeping in to her more recent works. This piece is from her 2014 collection called Tropical Garden.

I almost want to climb into these glorious bright watercolours and skip through these magical landscapes.

Her work brings light + colour + joy into the real world.

red moon eclipse october 2014 in cloudy sydney

I loved photographing the moon tonight… I had mere seconds to get my gear together as I thought the clouds would not let the moonlight through. So glad I had a painting stool and a placemat handy (spare charged up battery came in handy too).

IMG_3295s

Maybe the clouds made it more interesting – the movement of the clouds adds some perspective.

This kind so reminds me of a Constable painting or how heaven is supposed to look (at night).

Happy lunar eclipse world 🙂

Pros & Cons of seeing Kanye West Live in Concert

Pros & Cons of seeing Kanye West Live in Concert

I recently saw Kanye West in concert and was filled with equal parts admiration at his undeniable talent and disbelief at his seemingly boundless arrogance.

Just in case it was lost in translation… I love Kanye’s music and I would totally see him in concert again 😛

I haven’t seen this work in person but I hope to one day.

I love flat paintings + drawings and this sculpture plays with flatness in a whole new way. It is made out of welded steel and stands 15 meters high.

Neil-Dawson-Horisons

Neil Dawson (1948-) is a well known New Zealand sculptor and is best known for his large civic works crafted from stainless steel and aluminium. You can see more of Neil’s works on his site.

This work lives at Gibbs Farm also known as “The Farm” in Makarau, a 50 minute drive north of Auckland, New Zealand. Alan Gibbs bought the property in 1991 and decided to commission artworks to display on his farm, turning it into a beautiful outdoor gallery.

I LOVE SCIENCE and I LOVE ILLUSTRATION. This video is a perfect combination of the two… and we can all learn something while witnessing some stop motion beauty.

It’s amazing the great things you find on twitter 🙂
