Calzones Rotos is a classic Chilean sweet treat translates as “broken underwear”. The handmade pastry is cut into rectangles, a centre line cut and one end of the pastry is flipped through the cut. It’s then fried until golden and sprinkled with icing sugar. When done right, they are delicious. There are few things sweeter than homemade Caramel Slice. Fifteen years ago I did a creative writing course and a fellow student generously shared her great-aunt’s recipe with me. I have made a few alterations over the years – as I always do – but it is by far the best Caramel Slice I’ve ever had. I know I’ve already drawn a Haighs Chocolate but I really am a chocolate fiend. I adore their Chocolate Speckles… it’s impossible to stop at just one. I always buy these with the intention of having just a few… and the next thing I know I’m half a packet down and riddled with guilt. Yummo. Torta Mil Hojas is a glorious Chilean cake, its name literally translates to cake of a thousand leaves (or layers). Extremely thin layers of crispy biscuit-like pastry are stacked with generous layers of Manjar blanco (also known as dulce leech). It’s usually made a few days in advance as it gets better with each day… also, it doesn’t last long enough to know what happens to it after 3-4 days 😛 My Tia Hernan and I both agreed that the BEST Torta Mil Hojas was made by my Tia Cristina… by far the best on this continent. Perhaps the secret ingredients is her love ♥ Don’t worry Tia… I’m not hinting… just remembering xo

There a few treats sweeter than a good old-fashioned caluga from Chile (my mother’s mother country). It’s a medium soft caramel that you can either suck on or chew right away. Divine! ♥
