I love the grey purples of many succulent leaves. They have a smooth matt surface that feels almost velvety. The source image for this drawing was supplied by Kelsi Mackenzie a member of the Facebook group Succulent Swap Australia. The beauty of succulents is not only in their variety but in the gorgeous appearance of the most common specimens ♥ plus they are hard to kill 😛

Another weird and wonderful variety of the succulent plant family is Euphorbia obesa. This subtropical species is thornless and comes from South Africa. It is often called the Baseball plant due to its round bulbous shape when young but elongates with age. This is looking down at the top of a Baseball plant… an aerial point of view. Natures patterns are so beautiful, it’s hardly worth the effort of making our own up ♥

Succulents are so weird… they can be tall, round, spiral, spikey, smooth or warty and then they throw out delicate flowers that seem out of place. The source image for this one was shared by Renee Boxsell from the Facebook group Succulent Swap Australia ♥

There are so many weird and wonderful varieties of succulent plants… I recently saw someone looking for an unusual plant ion a Facebook group and it was one I hadn’t seen or heard of before… tephrocactus geometricus. It reminds me of BB-8 from Star Wars and it has a beautiful and very alien like bloom ♥

I have a massive version of this plant in my garden. I have had it for a long time… it’s called Agador Spartacus so that should reveal how old my plant is… to movie buffs 😛 The source image was shared yesterday by Robbie Grant on the Facebook group Succulent Swap Australia. I adore little cement pots with small succulents peaking out ♥

While I would never plant Prickly pears in Australia I can still admire how beautiful their fruit is. This plant was introduced to Australia and quickly invaded farmland making it unworkable. In an early case of successful biological pest control, a moth whose larva eat the prickly pear was introduced in 1925 and controlled the spread of the plant, almost eradicating it entirely. I love the shape of their paddle leaves and their pink fruit against the blue sky. I never draw sky but I had to this time as the contrast was too pretty ♥

Native to the hot arid regions of Mexico and the US, the agave plant is a garden staple for good reason. They are so easy to grow, very hardy, drought resistant and visually stunning. Their architectural leaves grace many a garden bed and I’ve got quite a few ♥

There are so many strange and beautiful succulents and cacti and some are quite alien. This one is a bit like a hard green fleshy rose. The original image for this one came from Leo Gonzalez from Succulents and Cacti Collectors Australia ♥

I think I took this photo at Bunnings… or maybe I found it on google LOL. I can’t remember.
These plant drawings have been more time consuming than other months themes… so many shades of green and subtle shadows. I’m having so much fun to figuring it out ♥

I love the pattern made by the leaves spiraling out of succuent plants. I’m sure Divinci would have had a theory about how and why these leaves create this pattern. This image was inpsired by a photo shared by Jude Zilla form the Facebook group Succulent Swap Australia ♥

I love how succulent plants can be round and squishy and then some of them have massive death spikes to protect themselves. Some could actually take an eye out. Stone plants, stones or Lithops are succulent plants that make a great first plant for kids… it was mine. I ended up killing mine with kindness, I watered it too much… kids are dumb LOL! They are so varied and interesting, they seem prehistoric and somehow alien at the same time.

I have decided to draw one of my favourite types of plants. I have always had a soft spot for succulents. When I knew I was going to draw succulent plants for the month of June I asked the lovely man at my local Bunnings if he minded if I take a bunch of photos of the little pots and he was happy for me to do so. I also put a call out on a facebook group Succulent Swap Australia and was overwhelmed by the number of beautiful photos that were shared with me. So this month is a combination of succulents from my own garden, generous facebook group members, Bunnings Kirrawee and a couple from Google images will make up the tapestry of #adrawingaday. Follow Succulent dreams and enjoy 🙂

I thought I’d end the month with a bit of sparkle ♥ This is another one of David Nightingale
Hicks stunning and classic geometric wallpaper designs. This sophisticated small-scale hexagon wallpaper is a design classic. I wonder which one of his famous clients he had in mind when he designed this one. Now I’m not sure if the original design had the gold hexagons merely printed on or if they were, in fact, gold leaf but I have decided to go all out and gold leaf my version. So much fun. The use of the pale soft creamy grey with the strong bold charcoal lines is so striking, the pop of gold is the pièce de résistance. I hope you’ve enjoyed this month’s theme of WALLPAPER AS ART.

Vintage Chinese damask designs are still being reproduced and referenced today. Their appeal is timeless. Modern wallpapers have different textures, are washable, can include gold details, can be printed on demand and can bring designs to life that were previously imaginable ♥

Vintage 1970’s wallpaper design is highly collectable and is often sold in marketplaces like Etsy (where I found this little ditty). Flower power was in full swing and the flowers made their way onto dresses, furnishings and walls. Flowers everywhere. I did brighten up the colours of this design as the browns and yellows didn’t cut it for me 😛

Alexander Girard’s Alphabet pattern wallpaper design was released in the US in 1952 and was originally produced for Herman Miller. It is still produced today. Alexander was a trailblazer in modern design. He was quite traditional in his approach but ended up producing extremely modern and fresh designs that are still relevant and modern today. It’s his minimalist approach to design that is so appealing ♥

Asian inspired wallpapers have been all the rage for centuries. While it’s hard to distinguish if the influence was Chinese, Japanese or East Asian the overall Asian look of this wallpaper is screamingly obvious. Imagine how peaceful this design would make a room feel… floating lilies in a sea of calming blue ♥

This is a detail from a wallpaper pattern book from the 1890’s. Beautiful scrolling vines crawling up the walls of castles and stately homes would have been elevated by bringing the forest indoors. At the time fabric patterns were achieved by labour-intensive tapestry and embroidery, so wallpaper was a great way to introduce colour and design to homes ♥

Art Deco’s geometric designs graced the walls of houses and hotels and added instant glamour… they still do. We associate the great era of Art Deco design with class, style and sophistication. The simple line motifs not only made their way onto walls but onto furniture, light fittings and architecture. It is such a strong design period form history and is instantly recognisable ♥

Chinese wallpaper was all the rage in the 18th century. This design is a small snippet of some wallpaper panels made in China for export to Europe. Watercolour and gouache on paper were laid on canvas. The colours are so fresh and the composition was so sweet it must have been so new and exciting in the 18th century Europe ♥

Another one of Florence Broadhurst’s beautiful and timeless designs is her Egrets wallpaper. In her younger years, Florence was a performer, singing in Toowoomba in 1918 and then in 1922, she left Australia to perform in a musical comedy group called the Globe Trotters. They travelled through South East Asia and China and her stage name was Miss Bobby. She performed with several other groups and spent time in Delhi and Shanghai. Her time in Asia influenced her designs later in life and she adopted a modern and minimalistic chinoiserie style that she made all her own ♥

Finnish designs have had a huge influence on the creative world and few more than those from the house of Marimekko. Textiles, fashion and furnishings displaying bold Marimekko designs dominated the 1960’s and have never stopped being relevant. The bold colours and simple geometric shapes have gone on to influence modern design and would be at home on any wall today ♥ One of their most iconic designs is Unikko (translates to poppy in English). It was first released in 1964 just after the company announced that they would never release a floral design 😛

Chinoiserie is a decorative Western style originating from the 18th century that plagiarised Chinese patterns, designs and motifs. Chinese art had an enormous influence on art and design. Botanical and floral designs were refreshed through imported Chinese artefacts. This style persists today and is popular in fabric, paper and interior design ♥
