what i learnt this week :: WEEK 50
#WhatILearntThisWeek
The art of forgetting is a seldom discussed and very under appreciated skill. I’m not talking about me forgetting to post this message yesterday or leaving my phone at home, I’m talking about intentionally forgetting things that bother us.
I can get stuck in a thought pattern that is not good for me. Someone pisses me off and I might not talk about it but it swirls around and around in my head festering and annoying me. I have yet to master this skill but with focus I have been getting better at it.
In my experience some things are easier to let go of than others and the art of letting go requires at least a little bit of working out. It’s a bit of a cognitive behavioural approach as in challenging the idea. If a thought or someone’s actions are really bugging you and you can’t let it go or forget it then challenge the way it makes you feel. Ask yourself and answer the questions:
- Does it really matter?
- Why is this bugging me so much?
- Did they hit a nerve and point out one of my weaknesses?
- Do I care enough about their opinion of me to let it bother me this much?
If you can ask yourself a bunch of challenging questions as to why this thought, opinion or behaviour is bugging you so much you may be able to on some level resolve your response to it. You can’t control other people’s behaviour but you can control how you choose to respond to it.
So long story short… the art of forgetting starts with challenging why something is bothering you and to shift your focus by distracting yourself with something else. The distraction will not work on it’s own if you haven’t done the work (challenging questions).
This won’t work for everyone and it might not work in every situation but realising that you have control over your response by actively challenging your subconscious reaction to other peoples behaviour can lead to improved forgetting skills.
Give it a go and if it doesn’t work for you then forget about it 😛

what i learnt this week :: WEEK 49
#WhatILearntThisWeek
I was walking through a food court and took a mental stock of how people were sitting. Perhaps it was because my back was killing me and my posture was on point as a coping mechanism.
The majority of people had moderately bad posture but roughly 10% had horrendous posture. I’m talking about really really bad posture when it appears that someone is trying to rest their chin in their own lap. What is with that all about!
I must admit there are moments that I am guiltily of this same offence but it is very rare and it usually involves me having some kind of stretch at the end of a very long day. There’s no way of tip toeing around it… it’s ugly. The most attractive person looks ugly if they’re back is arched over like one of the sails of the Opera House. Just look at how much fatter your gut looks when you slouch… defeating the purpose of all of those gym visits.
So if you want to look good make sure you’ve done your best before you leave the house (clean hair, natural make up if you’re that way inclined and fresh threads) and make sure you don’t undo your efforts with slouchiness. It makes you look fat and ugly. Now you just need the muscles to go with the good posture… did I hear someone say Pilates? Get moving and sit up straight 😛

Illustrators Australia 9×5 Exhibition Opening Night
While I didn’t get to attend Illustrators Australia ‘9X5’ exhibition at St Heliers St Gallery in Abbotsford only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD, here are some images of my work on the walls. It’s rather nice to see my work ‘Sweet Dreams’ hanging in an exhibition 🙂
The exhibition is on until the 5th December and there is no entry free so if you’re in Melbourne, check it out! The three photos below are courtesy of the Illustrators Australia Facebook page.
An auction is still running until the end of the exhibition on all 70 of the works on display so see all works at this link and bid away>>>
You can bid on my work “Sweet Dreams by clicking here>>> or you can see my Illustrators Australia profile here>>>.
what i learnt this week :: WEEK 48
#WhatILearntThisWeek
As I get older I see more and more friends struggling with fertility and the massive stress this puts on the individual and the couple. I’ve seen friends get married and no sooner have they said their vows they are bombarded with the question “when are you going to have kids?”
Times have changed… society has evolved so much but we still hold on to the idea that everyone will want to have children… eventually! Even though I decided some years ago that I didn’t want to have children I would still ask this inane question of every friend of mine who got hitched. Why? Habit? Who the hell am I to stick my nose into someone else’s reproductive business?
It happens at every level of our modern society… for the last decade magazines have been speculating as to the occupancy of Jennifer Aniston’s womb… I have seen friends cringe at the mere mention of children as they’re trying very hard to have one and don’t want to justify themselves to everyone they speak to… and more recently Holly Brockwell and editor of a lifestyle website for women wrote a short article for the BBC stating that she didn’t want to have children and received horrendous personal threats. This last week it escalated in the most horrible way in the US with the mass shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs killing three people.
Why does the idea of a woman – or a couple for that matter – taking their reproductive lives into their own hands so troubling for so many. Why do people care if someone breeds or not? How is it affecting their lives?
A few years ago an older girlfriend of mine told me of the trouble she had when she decided in her 20’s (back in the 1980’s) to have her tubes tied. Surgeon after surgeon refused to do the procedure until one day a doctor made her sign a contract that she would not change her mind and have it reversed. She never changed her mind and was happy to know that she would not have to deal with an unwanted pregnancy in her future.
Do men receive the same scrutiny when they decide not to have children? I think not.
I recently caught up with a mate of mine who had recently married. We had a long and lazy catch up over whisky and biscotti and after a while he wondered why I hadn’t asked him if they were trying to have kids. I told him that it was none of my business. He went on to tell me that he had been harassed by every relative they had visited on their trip home and it was adding to the stress of not being able to fall pregnant as quickly as they’d like.
So wether someone wants to get pregnant and can’t or never wants to incubate a baby… stay out of their business. Harassing someone about their reproductive future is not helpful and frankly it’s none of your business.

#WhatILearntThisWeek
It took me many years to figure out that perfectionism was a prison that was preventing me from making and creating. It literally paralyses your creative process… wanting everything to be perfect is the best way to make sure you won’t do anything.
This doesn’t affect everyone one but it sure got in my way four about 15 years. This whole idea of “I’m not good enough” to paint, draw, write has inspired many books, courses and movements (like The Artists Way). We basically get in the way of our own creative expression and use all manner of excuses to do so.
To get over this I made a point of publishing and sharing less than perfect work and something rather wonderful happened… I started liking my ‘not-so-perfect’ results. I found that once I published something (regardless of whether it made an impact or not) there was now space in my head to create more… finishing something (perfect or imperfect) allowed me the room to make the next project… therefore, unblocking the creative process.
So you want to do something creative, or fun, or adventurers and you’re afraid to fail, to look stupid or not be the perfect being you think you deserve to be… get out of your own way and fail (best lessons ever), make fun of yourself (who said stupid wasn’t fun) and laugh along with anyone laughing at you (just think how happy you are making people) and embrace your imperfections because at the end of the day that is what will differentiate us from the robots once the uprising begins*!
*kidding, not kidding LOL
I love this quote form Elizabeth Gilbert.

Illustrators Australia’s 9×5 Exhibition: Playtime
Now in its 19th year, this year’s ‘9X5’ exhibition promises to be bigger than ever, with 70 original artworks on display and for sale at St Heliers St Gallery in Abbostford only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD.
The ‘9×5’ Illustrators Australia members exhibition, (inspired by the Heidelberg School of artists in the late 1800s, in which cigar boxes measuring roughly 9 x 5 inches were used as the substrate in an exhibition of the same name), has been a mainstay of Illustrators Australia’s exhibition activities since 1995. All work is available for sale by auction at the show opening, with the occasional pieces being subject to quite a lot of heated bidding.
There are many beautiful works for sale… if you can’t make it to the exhibition you can browse all of the works and can bid online at Illustrators Australia’s site (via silent auction).
Here is my submission… as a new member I wasn’t really sure what to do but with the them being ‘Playtime’ I had to have some collage fun with my girl Lil’ Wendy.
It is available for bidding via this link>>>
Please let me know if you attend the exhibition and send me a photo of my work on the wall as I will not be attending 🙂

#WhatILearntThisWeek
My mother lives very much in the RIGHT NOW and I love this about her. She keeps us all young with her exciting plans and adventurous spirit. She’s always up for a party, an exhibition or anything fun and spontaneous (including throwing plates off a two story balcony).
Recently she was making arrangements for us all to go and visit Sculptures by the Sea and she said ‘this is a once in a lifetime experience’. Someone in the room said ‘no it’s not, it’s on every year’ and I got to thinking… and they were wrong. Every day, every experience and every thing we ever do is a once in a lifetime experience… we will never have that exact same experience again no matter how routine or mundane our lives become.
Even if we went to visit Sculptures by the Sea every day that it was on, it would still be a unique experience each time… especially if we approach it with fresh eyes and without expectations. Perhaps this is why hippies in cashmere sweaters are always telling us to live in the now… because now IS once in a lifetime.
Make the most of every second and enjoy it wether you’re sitting on the couch, commuting to work or skydiving without a back up parachute.
