Illustrators Australia 9×5 Exhibition Opening Night
While I didn’t get to attend Illustrators Australia ‘9X5’ exhibition at St Heliers St Gallery in Abbotsford only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD, here are some images of my work on the walls. It’s rather nice to see my work ‘Sweet Dreams’ hanging in an exhibition 🙂
The exhibition is on until the 5th December and there is no entry free so if you’re in Melbourne, check it out! The three photos below are courtesy of the Illustrators Australia Facebook page.
An auction is still running until the end of the exhibition on all 70 of the works on display so see all works at this link and bid away>>>
You can bid on my work “Sweet Dreams by clicking here>>>Â or you can see my Illustrators Australia profile here>>>.
Illustrators Australia’s 9×5 Exhibition: Playtime
Now in its 19th year, this year’s ‘9X5’ exhibition promises to be bigger than ever, with 70 original artworks on display and for sale at St Heliers St Gallery in Abbostford only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD.
The ‘9×5’ Illustrators Australia members exhibition, (inspired by the Heidelberg School of artists in the late 1800s, in which cigar boxes measuring roughly 9 x 5 inches were used as the substrate in an exhibition of the same name), has been a mainstay of Illustrators Australia’s exhibition activities since 1995. All work is available for sale by auction at the show opening, with the occasional pieces being subject to quite a lot of heated bidding.
There are many beautiful works for sale… if you can’t make it to the exhibition you can browse all of the works and can bid online at Illustrators Australia’s site (via silent auction).
Here is my submission… as a new member I wasn’t really sure what to do but with the them being ‘Playtime’ I had to have some collage fun with my girl Lil’ Wendy.
It is available for bidding via this link>>>
Please let me know if you attend the exhibition and send me a photo of my work on the wall as I will not be attending 🙂
my kintsugi heart
#myKintsugiHeart
Kintsugi or Kintsukuroi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted with precious metals like gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy is to treat breaks and celebrate them as part of the story of an object rather than throwing it out just because it’s had a rough time. Kintsugi literally means golden joinery in Japanese.
Ashikaga Yoshimasa was a Japanese military commander in the late 15th century who sent his favourite tea bowl to China for repair. When it came back with large clunky staples he charged his craftsmen to find a more ascetically pleasing way to repair the bowl.
They came up with Kintsugi, a means of repairing a break that celebrates the repair as a thing of beauty rather than trying to pretend that it never happened. This repair philosophy aligns with the Buddhist based view of Wabi Sabi, a means of finding beauty in things that are flawed and imperfect. While Wabi Sabi concepts are religious in origin they are actually a very casual and mainstream concept in modern Japan. This approach means we can learn to embrace rather than disguise damage and imperfection, as they are inevitable in ceramics, in life and certainly with our hearts.
Can we go one step further and apply Kintsugi to our own fragile human hearts? I like to think we can. After all it was Ernest Hemingway who said “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills.” So it seems that breaking is essential not only to grow but also to cope or just merely exist so we might as well embrace the breakages and wear them with pride.
We have all had our hearts broken many times over many things. It is not only romantic love that leaves scars on our hearts. I like to think that I have loved hard and that every break serves to make my heart stronger and more beautiful. This also means I will love again because it can only make my Kintsugi heart more beautiful
pop culture robots, a historical study: gnut
#popculturerobots
Gnut first appeared in Farewell to the Master, a science fiction short story written by Harry Bates and published in the October 1940 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. The story was then made into a film called The Day The Earth Stood still (1951) and Gnut’s name was changed to Gort. This giant killer humanoid robot is a bodyguard for a mysterious alien call Klaatu (a humanoid alien ambassador of peace). Here is the deliciously kitsch movie trailer…
[youtube id=”OfpSXI8_UpY” maxwidth=”1000″]
Gort does not speak but he can pulverise anything with his awesome laser beam that shoots from his visor. He is made from one sheet of metal and stands over 8 feet tall. Even in black and white Gort was an intimidating character. He is part of an interstellar police force trying to preserve peace by destroying anything he perceives as a threat.
“In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor.” – Klaatu
[youtube id=”K6iF5sINVns” maxwidth=”1000″]
Klaatu comes to earth on a mission of peace but is confronted by humanities tendency to panic when facing the unknown. While Gort never speaks, his mission of destruction destruction is halted the words “Klaatu barada nikto“. This phrase was never translated and it’s true meaning remains a mystery.
[youtube id=”cXLPFqdLPKY” maxwidth=”1000″]
The 2008 remake staring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly is a much more polished big blockbuster affair but it lacks the examination of the human condition of the original film. Casting Mr Reeves might seem a logical step as his wooden performance might perfectly suit the role of alien but I don’t buy it. I’ll let YouTuber AlternatingLine sum it up for you “do yourself a favour and avoid the remake”. Love his blunt comparison…
[youtube id=”hmFYAmp9yiA” maxwidth=”1000″]
Gort (originally Gnut) is a pioneer in pop culture robotics and is as iconic today as he was in the cold war era. While it’s not official I can see that Gort may have influenced the design of another pop culture robot classic the Cylon… what do you think?
I will be publishing 15 robot profiles over the coming weeks. Feel free to share on social media (please link back to my site).

winter in sydney
#winterinsydney
I was walking to the supermarket the other day and it was sooooo incredibly beautiful and warm in the sun that I had to take off my scarf and my jacket. I turned a corner and as soon as I hit the shade I was freeeeeezing. I couldn’t get my layers on fast enough. Such a Sydney winter thing to do. It’s all about layers.
The winter sun is so glorious but as soon as it’s gone your day can go from glorious to dreadful.

Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award: Beach Bodies: February 2015
This is my entry for the 2015 Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award that I managed to submit with 24 minutes to spare. Beach Bodies: February 2015 is based on a photograph I took at Manly Beach in February of this year.
This is the overall work and how it is to be hung on the wall (see below for more detail).
Beach Bodies: February 2015
Inktense + Pencil on Paper. The entire work is 100 cm x 170 cm.
Above is a close up of the main image, measuring 100 cm x 100 cm.
 Â
 Â
Above are close up’s of the 4 satellite images (ranging from 10 cm x 10 cm to 23 cm x 23 cm) that sit on either side of the main drawing.
At the moment all of these images are unframed but sit on foam core board sitting just proud of the wall creating a shadow line around each drawing.
This is the photo the drawing is based on.
The finalist will be announced on 1 May 2015. I really enjoyed the challenge of doing such a large drawing and my favourite part of the work is the amount of negative space created by leaving out the background. I’m planning to do a large scale drawing of a football game soon. I’ll post it once it’s done.
If you would like to commission a drawing, please get in touch.
memphis the cat
This drawing was a commission by one sister to give to another sister on her birthday… what a lovely and original idea. Memphis is gorgeous and stoic. I was overjoyed that the birthday girl was so happy with the likeness.
You never really know how someone will react to your work as it is so subjective but amazing feedback like this is very heartwarming <3
If you would like to immortalise your pet with a custom pet portrait then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
