Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award: Beach Bodies: February 2015
This is my entry for the 2015 Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award that I managed to submit with 24 minutes to spare. Beach Bodies: February 2015 is based on a photograph I took at Manly Beach in February of this year.
This is the overall work and how it is to be hung on the wall (see below for more detail).
Beach Bodies: February 2015
Inktense + Pencil on Paper. The entire work is 100 cm x 170 cm.
Above is a close up of the main image, measuring 100 cm x 100 cm.
Above are close up’s of the 4 satellite images (ranging from 10 cm x 10 cm to 23 cm x 23 cm) that sit on either side of the main drawing.
At the moment all of these images are unframed but sit on foam core board sitting just proud of the wall creating a shadow line around each drawing.
This is the photo the drawing is based on.
The finalist will be announced on 1 May 2015. I really enjoyed the challenge of doing such a large drawing and my favourite part of the work is the amount of negative space created by leaving out the background. I’m planning to do a large scale drawing of a football game soon. I’ll post it once it’s done.
If you would like to commission a drawing, please get in touch.

I had a great discussion with an orthopaedic surgeon this week… it was one of those great chats where you’re both fascinated and schooled by someone who knows so much.
We were talking about evolution, exercise and how humans best move and function. Then he dropped this little pearl of wisdom… “strength is the enemy of speed’. I had to stop and think about it and it’s true. If an arm is super muscly and massive it will move much slower than a lean and nimble arm. Likewise, a super strong military tank will sluggishly creep across the ground but a sports car will fly by because it is not weighed down by ‘strength’.
It is a super simple idea but I really the way it broken down entirely.
It made me think… I want to get strong but not too strong. I want to be fast and agile but not at the expense of strength. We’ve all got to find sweet spot in the middle.

memphis the cat
This drawing was a commission by one sister to give to another sister on her birthday… what a lovely and original idea. Memphis is gorgeous and stoic. I was overjoyed that the birthday girl was so happy with the likeness.
You never really know how someone will react to your work as it is so subjective but amazing feedback like this is very heartwarming <3

This has been a huge lesson for me this year.
After seeing the Chuck Close exhibition at the MCA in January I was struck, not only by his work but by his amazing work ethic. Despite devastating disability and debilitating pain he continues to work.
I have battled with my own self doubt and lack of drive when it came to getting my creative projects from my head into the real world. I was always creating work in my mind but never committing it to paper or wood. By doing so I could never really fail and I got to feel like an artists without really doing anything tangible.
Chuck Close kind of shook me to my core and since that day I have done at least one drawing a day. The passion is only one part of the equation and I’ve always had plenty of that… the magic is in the doing and once you start working more passion follows.
So to anyone out there who has a creative spark… just make something… more will come. Trust me 🙂

It seems amazing to me that some people still feel shame or guilt about not having a ‘traditional’ family. Really? Who gives a shit? Not me.
I really believe we make our own family. For some people their blood relatives are everything and that is great. For others – who for whatever reason don’t fit in with or get along with their families – they tend to make their friends their family. And then there are a bunch of us who have a glorious mixture of both.
I think it’s about time we stopped judging ourselves and others for the family we have (given or chosen).
family (according to dictionary.com)
[fam-uh-lee, fam-lee]
noun, plural families.
1. a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not:
the traditional family. a social unit consisting of one or more adults together with the children they care for: a single-parent family.
2. the children of one person or one couple collectively: We want a large family.
3. the spouse and children of one person: We’re taking the family on vacation next week.
4. any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins: to marry into a socially prominent family.
5. all those persons considered as descendants of a common progenitor.
6. Chiefly British. approved lineage, especially noble, titled, famous, or wealthy ancestry: young men of family.
7. a group of persons who form a household under one head, including parents, children, and servants.

There are days that anything that can go wrong goes to shit… it’s hard to maintain my trademark positivity on such days and I now have a new mantra to get me through. When all else fails and everything is turning to crap I repeat ‘Murphy Sucks’.
Murphy’s law is an adage that in modern times means “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”.
It’s ok to sometimes surrender and just roll with the metaphorical punches that keep smacking you in the face. Remember, anything that can go wrong… will go wrong and Murphy is a BASTARD!

I am not a particularly big fan of Bill Shorten (or any pollies) but his words this morning on the ABC rang very true for me.
There is no justice.
The double standards of Indonesia on the topic of execution sickens me.
This is a super sad situation and I can’t see how it can be resolved positively.

R.I.P. Leonard Nimoy
#RIPLeonardNimoy #RIPSpock #RIPWilliamBell
He brought a cold and unfeeling character to life and despite Spock’s inability to feel… we certainly loved him.
Leonard (and Spock + William Bell) developed a cult following over the past 83 years. I love Leonard in Star Trek (who wouldn’t love Spock) but I also adore him in the TV series Fringe (2008). If you haven’t watched it… do yourself a favour and get a bit more Leonard into your life (he’s not in every episode but he rocks).
[youtube id=”eVFNNWLCXPo” maxwidth=”1000″]
He was also a poet and it’s sad to see that poetry is one of the arts that is falling out of favour. I love this poem he shared on February 22 via twitter (he was saying goodbye on twitter for a while now)…
You and I
have learned
The song of love,
and we sing it well
The song is ageless
Passed on
Heart to heart
By those
Who have seen
What we see
And known
What we know
And lovers who have
Sung before
Our love is ours
To have
And
To share
The miracle is this
The more we share…
The more
We have
-Leonard Nimoy
Wise words from a cultural icon “The miracle is, The more we share… The more We have”. Just wonderful.
Rest in peace my Vulcan friend 🙁
what i learnt this week :: WEEK 9
Recently I’ve been noticing that the older I get, the more I get out of hanging with my girlfriends (this includes sisters & mums as well). I’ve always held my girlfriends in high esteem but I now realise that they are an essential ingredient in my life providing sanity, clarity, fun, shenanigans, a sounding board, a cheer squad and a vault for my insecurities and secrets.
We all grow up fantasising that we’ll meet a great guy (or gal) that will fulfil all of our needs, but you can’t get everything from JUST one person. The more we expect from our partner the more we’ll be disappointed in their inability to be ALL things.
This does not mean that I expect less from a partner, but they can’t be EVERYTHING. Likewise this does not mean that partners are not important… they really are… but if we can share some of the crazy around, then maybe we can have more fun times with our significant other.
I was having breakfast with a girlfriend last Sunday and I was trying to explain my girlfriends philosophy to her… I wasn’t very elegant about it it. She told me that her mum always said (paraphrasing here) “girlfriends are the main meal… guys are desert”. I loved this… it’s just perfect.
We need our girlfriends to sustain and nourish us BUT to have balanced meal and satisfy all of our senses we have our guy(s) for desert (an essential part of any meal). This simple and elegant phrase perfectly summarises the essential nature our girlfriends play in our lives and that while we can live without desert… we choose to indulge in a little bit of man-love to top off a perfect meal.

This really happened… I was in a doctors appointment and my mum was sitting next to me. The doctor asked me how severe my foot pain was and my natural response was ‘it hurt like a motherfucker’… the room was silent, a shudder went through both the doctor and my mother and after what seemed like minutes the doctor sighed and said ‘I’ll just write that it really hurt’.
I blame Prince… I’ve been doing a whole 90’s revival thing and in particular Prince’s Love Symbol Album including the incredibly catchy earworm Sexy MF… Sexy motherfucker shakin’ that ass…Shakin’ that ass, shakin’ that ass! It just gets into your brain… YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
