#WhatILearntThisWeek
Because of some interesting health issues I try to be as ‘natural’ as possible. I work hard to eliminate unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals in my home and diet.
A few years ago the whole crystal deodorant fad happened and I gave it a go. I used it on a day that was a particularly long day… all day at a conference and then straight onto a gala dinner. Mid afternoon I realised that the crystal was a LIE and had to deal with the ripe hamburgers* living in my armpits. Luckily I had some girlfriends at the conference who were staying in town and I went back to their hotel room and washed my shirt, dried it with the hairdryer and applied many layers of ‘real’ deodorant and borrowed perfume. I think I got away with it but only because of the kindness of generous girlfriends.
Recently I have read amazing review about a natural deodorant in a pot – people are losing their minds over it. Some mates of mine got into it and could not speak highly enough about the product. The other week I was in the healthfood shop and decided to give it ago. I was cautious after my previous experience and used it around the house for a few weeks and it seemed ok. I used it on Friday – a long day out in the office. I didn’t think about it at all during the day but at 5pm without trying, I could smell my hamburgers. ARGHHHHHH! How could I let this happen again? I stayed away from people and kept my arms glued to my torso until I got home. I got away with it but it was a valuable lesson… DON’T TRUST NATURAL DEODORANTS. They don’t work in real life.
* hamburgers refers to the smell of an old timey and not very clean milk bar and the smell of gross hamburgers frying in old oil… this is a family saying and refers to bad BO.

#WhatILearntThisWeek
There is a lot of talk about white privilege + racism + sexism and wether or not they are currently a problem in our society. I think they are.
It is so easy to say that prejudice does not exist when you’re in a position of power. A middle aged white man will not likely see the roadblocks and obstacles in the way of women in the workplace. A person who is of the majority race cannot fully understand the toll casual and overt racism has on minorities. A very wealthy person who has never experienced poverty cannot understand why poor people don’t just get a job and get ahead.
Looking down from the top of the pyramid is not a complete view. They cannot see the struggles, hurt and damage done by their own prejudice. They are so clueless that they can’t even see their own prejudice.
Bill O’Reilly (one of the most clueless men of ‘power’ and influence) recently suggested that racism no longer exists because of America’s dominance in the Olympics. What one thing has to do with the other is beyond me. I will believe racism is over when minorities, NOT the white majority, say that it is. I’m sure Bill doesn’t experience a lot of racism in his daily life so what would he know about it.
I recently had a robust discussion with someone about the different ways girls and boys are educated about sex and what is deemed “acceptable” for each. He told me that girls were now treated the same as boys and that ‘slut shaming’ no longer existed. I know this is not true. A guy who sleeps around is still some kind of legend and a woman who does the same is labelled a “slut”. A guy can’t see the discrepancy because he is on the ‘winning’ side. He might not have a problem with the sex lives of his female friends but I assure you that a large vocal section of our society still does.
The next time you’re sitting in judgement on someone, try to think about your perspective and if you can indeed see all of the obstacles someone else might see from another angle.

PerimenopART
A friend of mine shared a HILARIOUS illustration on Facebook and it made me properly crack up.
PerimenopART is a range of humorous illustrations highlighting the struggles women face during their perimenopausal years. While I am not myself preminipausal these images speak to all women and will make you literally laugh out loud. This amazing and funny body of work is by an artist called Kirsty Collett – I don’t know much about her but I do know she has mad skills.
You can see her work on her Facebook page PerimenopART. When she gets her shop up and running I’ll update it here 🙂 in the mean time you can email her directly.

A friend of mine told me an interesting story recently… he rents out a holiday house and attracts very different feedback for exactly the same property. Some people leave wonderful feedback saying how lovely their stay was while others will complain about just about everything. This is the same house with the same contents. The house does not change but the feedback is varied. What does this mean? The feedback you give says more about you than you think it does.
You are putting your spin – positive or negative – on everything you see or experience. You approach every experience with an internal list of expectations and you measure everything according to that standard. There is something to be said about living in the moment – I know it’s a hippy dippy thing to say but if you could experience things without expectations you might enjoy them more.
It’s up to you how you wish to perceive things. Think about this the next time you complain about something and ponder what that complaint says about you.
Food for thought.

#WhatILearntThisWeek
Have you noticed how busy everyone is? Every time you ask someone how they are it triggers a frantic list of things they have done or have to do and how incredibly busy they are.
Aren’t we all busy? Sure some people more than others but I’ve worked on projects with people who complain so much about being busy, that if they had spent that time doing rather than complaining they would have completed whatever they were complaining they didn’t have time to do. It’s a bit mental.
Busy in an addiction. It’s almost as if we need to validate our existence by proving how incredibly busy we are and by doing so we are saying ‘I’m important’.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t complain about things in life that bother us but if busy is all you’ve got going on, it might be time to reassess your life, what is important to you, what you are choosing to take on and what tasks you can say no to so that your life is less hectic and more manageable.
If you feel guilty because you’ve taken a moment to enjoy a quiet cup of tea, chat to a mate or binge watch OITNB then you likely have a busy addiction. It is important to meet targets and get things done in life, but it is also important to look after ourselves and recharge so that we can be the best version of ourselves and not a tired + angry + busy mess.
You don’t have to be productive 100% of the time. Be busy – just don’t wear it as a badge of honour.
Remember the old saying… all work and no play makes you a very dull person.

When I was younger I used to hear a lot of women say “when you hit 40 something happens and you just don’t give a shit any more… you just get on with your life.” I didn’t really know what it meant and then I turned 40. There is some kind of magic in that number… I’m not sure how it works but it just does.
It’s as if a lot (not all but most) of the insecurities that were holding you back from doing what you love fall away and you decide to finally back yourself.
There comes a time in your life when you have to back yourself. You can no longer wait for someone to come along and make your dreams come true. You have to do it for yourself. This sounds really basic but it’s not. A lot of us are waiting and the time to stop is NOW.
Figure out what your dream is and make it happen. No one else can or will do it for you – it’s up to you. It’s time to back yo’ self!

education is a weapon
#educationisaweapon #olympics2016 #KipchogeKeino
Beautiful words spoken by Kipchoge Keino at the Opening Ceremony at the Rio Olympic Games 2016.
He is a Kenyan Olympic Gold Medalist who after a successful sporting career dedicated his life to helping children through education and sport. He initally opened a children’s home and now cares for almost 100 Kenyan orphans. He later opened the Kip Keino High Performance Training Centre and provides training to the most promising athletes in Kenya.
Kip is the first ever athlete to receive the Olympic Laurel award that will now be awarded every Olympics. The award was created to honour outstanding sportsmen and women for their achievements in social engagements.
I love his words, attitude and the great deeds he has done.

#WhatILearntThisWeek
Power… an addictive drug. It is something that drives humanity to survive, concur and evolve. Just like so many of the things that in our past gave us an evolutionary advantage, power has some undesirable carry over effects.
The definition of power is (in the context to which I am referring to) the possession of control or command over others; authority; ascendancy. Power is one of the defining characteristics that enabled Homo sapiens to conquer the land building towns and cities. However, now we strive to have power over other things… our family members, work colleges, pets, the weak and infirmed.
Power is often seen as taking power from someone and using it to dominate them… this seems to be the base understanding of what power is. Here are just a few recent examples of how the desire for power over others has been represented in our news headlines…
- Children being horribly abused while in juvenile detention – is this not a horrible display of men wanting to feel powerful at the expense of the children involved?
- An elderly man choked, restrained, hit and force fed by a ‘care’ worker in a nursing home – the ‘care’ worker in question no doubt felt powerful by abusing and intimating his victim.
- The horrendous amount of family violence cases, far too many of them resulting in the death of women in Australia (and beyond) – these men feel powerful by verbally, emotionally and physically abusing their partners.
- Police officers abusing their power by bullying, harassing or shooting unarmed citizens – men with guns feeling powerful by taking power away from others.
- Trump… what can I say – he seems to me to be drunk on power and will do and say just about anything to keep it.
Power over other people and things is not true power. I read Gary Zukav’s The Seat of the Soul a few years ago (because Oprah told me to). I hate self-help books but this one was particularly eye opening. He explained that having power over other people was a cheep and easy power that did not last and was not good for your own soul.
However, learning to have power over yourself and realising that every negative emotion is fear was tremendously liberating… at least it was for me. If you are truly powerful you look after yourself and those around you (strangers, friends, family, animals and the planet). If you are truly powerful you will not take power away from other people… you will find it in yourself.
It’s like eating junk food for a quick fix (cheep power) and eating healthy food that nourishes your soul and everyone around you (authentic power).
That’s about as hippy as I get. Think about it.

Most “normal” people seem to figure out at some point in their lives that people are untimely more important that amassing wealth (of course there are many exceptions and that is what concerns me).
There seem to be a greater number of people and ultimately companies that exist only to amass more wealth… at any cost. There are so many examples that I could give myself RSI writing them all down. To name a few:
– The fashion GIANT Zara stealing designs from an indie artist Tuesday Bassen instead of paying her a reasonable rate for her work.
– Oliver Curtis (the husband of publicist Roxy Jacenko) recently convicted of insider trading.
– The power the NRA has over the USA government blocking any reasonable gun law reform.
– Trump… that’s it just Trump. You know what I’m talking about. Here is just one small example – watch this video.
– Large mining corporations raping land and leaving toxic disasters and no financial advantage to locals who have to live with the aftermath of irresponsible mining practices.
– Companies like Google and Ikea threatening to leave Australia if the government enforces tax reform making them pay their fair share (just like the rest of us).
– the list is literally endless…
Our Governments are as guilty of this as individuals and corporations.
Human life is precious and we should look after people first… before profits. However, that is not how it works. According to Oxfam the top 1% of the world own the same amount of wealth as the remaining 99% of the worlds population. I am not rich bashing but how much money does the 1% really need.
As Midnight Oil said in their 1982 hit Read About It, “The rich get richer, the poor get the picture“. We get the picture all right; people don’t matter to the power players of the world.

#WhatILearntThisWeek
Time goes faster the older you get (because you have experienced a lot of time already) but something happens to the passage of time when you are engrossed in a project you love.
Now that it’s winter I’m doing more indoor activities and I found I was spending too much time living in my phone. Candy Crush is great fun but not when it’s the only game you play for days and it comes at the price of talking to people in your life.
I made a conscious effort to do more ‘out of my phone’ activities and started doing puzzles again. Puzzles are AWESOME! I know I’m a bit of a nerd but they really are. The great thing about doing puzzles is that if someone else is in the room they will invariably sit at the table and start puzzling. Conversation begins… it’s wonderful.
I get really stuck in and on a few occasions I have said to myself ‘I’ll just to 10 minutes of puzzling and then go to bed.” It seems as though 5 minutes has passed when I check the time on my phone and BAM… 3 hours has passed and it’s 2am. Where the f#@k did the time go? Puzzles are very immersive and they can chew up quite a bit of time – very effortlessly as well.
Time can also pass quickly doing stuff on your phone but it’s not as social nor does it have many benefits.
Time is going to pass wether you are watching TV, playing games on your phone, chasing down imaginary cartoon creatures, playing games in real life or just sitting on the couch. We don’t want to wish our lives away but we might as well make a conscience effort to make sure we are doing something relaxing, enjoyable and with a social element. Try living outside of your phone for 5 minutes… it can be really fun 😛

I don’t go out a lot in winter… I have to wait for the warmest part of a moderate day to pop out and run my errands. I really appreciate these trips and I don’t take them for granted. I don’t travel far from home and I don’t speed.
Firstly I was not in a rush and secondly I enjoyed taking the time to see the world beyond my front door.
I parallel parked after failing to find a parking spot in a small street side parking lot. I was planning on waiting in the car while my companion got us some take away coffee. As soon as I turned off the engine I sensed a presence outside my window and looked to see a rather crazy looking lady screaming at me from inside her car. I had no idea what her problem was.
I signalled for her to open her window so that I could hear her… I immediately regretted this. She was spewing all kinds of foul abuse. Colourful insults were tripping over themselves to get out of her rancid mouth. I am not averse to swearing but I don’t do it at people… there is a HUGE difference between swearing at things/situations and yelling insults at someone’s face.
She thought I had sped through the car park risking life and limb to everyone around. This did not happen and she clearly had me confused with someone else. However, she was so erratic and frantic there was no talking to her so I did just that… I didn’t talk to her. I wound up the window and turned my gaze away from her repulsive crazy angry face.
Needless to say this made her madder (I hadn’t thought that was possible). She eventually drove off and I had to laugh.
Who knows what was going on in her life that she felt the needed to abuse someone to feel better about herself. Not my problem. It could have escalated quickly had I showed up at her crazy party. I don’t have spare energy for needless and pointless confrontations and at that point in time the best response was no response at all.
Think about it the next time some crazy MOFO is up in your grill yelling abuse. They’re probably not worth acknowledging 😛

Medina, Bagdad, Istanbul, Colorado, Syria, Iraq, Belgium, Yemen, Paris… when will it end! Probably never 🙁
Sometimes it is hard to know if love will indeed concur all. People who are positive and full of love don’t go and violently force their positive views on others. However there is a HUGE amount of vocalisation of hatred in the world right now and with their hatred they are taking and maiming so many lives.
I’m not sure love is the answer any more. I don’t think that sitting back and passively loving everyone around us is having a strong enough effect on those broken and damaged people who want to kill anyone whose beliefs differ from their own.
It seems that the problem is only getting worse and I’m not sure what the answer is. I just know that no one seems to be able to stop it.
I don’t want to have to draw another dripping heart illustration but I know I will – and sooner rather than later. Our prayers and good thoughts don’t go far enough to effect change. Can anyone come up with a brilliant idea as to how we can fix this problem? I don’t want to feel as if the world is going to shit… and it’s getting harder and harder not to let that state of mind creep in. I’m keeping it at the front door but it’s knocking louder and louder.
Love is isn’t enough – but it doesn’t mean I’ll stop putting it out there.

This needs little explanation. It’s cold! It’s bloody cold!! This winter has been the coldest in more than 20+ years and I need carbs to survive. I do my best to eat a low carb diet… but I’m not crazy about it. This winter I have had a lot of trouble staying off the white stuff. I want buttery toast + home made cakes + pasta + rice + homemade chips with eggs + mashed potato + potato rice (ask me if you don’t know this pleasure) + baked potato + any type of potato.
I have realised that resistance is futile and by giving in and making my body happy (within reason) I am making everyone else happy as I’m not being a momentous bitch (which is likely a side effect of not eating enough carbs).
So the next time it’s cold and someone is cranky… just give them a potato and maybe they’ll be less bitchy.
Now I’m going to go and butter some hot toast and make myself smile 🙂 Fuck it… it’s too cold to be a hero!

I think most residents of the free world are tired of greedy leaders who serve big business + the 1% + their own selfish interests. This is the reason there seems to be a bit of rebellious voting going on. Trump and Brexit for example… rebellious voting hurts the voters as well as the leaders they are so tired of having to watch. I don’t blame people for being disillusioned with our leaders – I certainly am. However, voting for bad choices is not the answer. I don’t actually know what the answer is but putting Trump in charge is not the answer.
I wonder how rebellious voting might impact our federal election this weekend in Australia. As long as Barnaby Joyce and Christopher Pyne don’t get reelected I can live with just about anything LOL.
Choose your vote wisely this weekend and lets hope we do Australia proud.

what i learnt this week 2016 :: WEEK 21
I have known this to be true for quite a while but it still surprises me.
Some really really close friends will do a disappearing act as soon as they get married or have kids. You expect this from loose friends on the periphery but when this happens with close friends it’s surprising.
I’m not sure if they don’t want to see their single child free friends any more as they think we won’t understand them anymore or that we weren’t as close as I thought. It’s bizarre.
On the other hand some close friends never disappear and while the frequency of calls and get togethers changes they make the effort to return calls or message every now and then.
Maybe these disappearing friends will one day wonder where all their old friends have gone and will get back in touch to reminisce about the good old days… I’ll wait and see.
I’m not annoyed at the lack of contact, just curious as to why some people seem to be able to keep their friends around and others don’t. I guess I’ll never know.

what i learnt this week 2016 :: WEEK 19
#WhatILearntThisWeek
I quite often say things off the cuff that can be taken the wrong way. I see the world from a slightly different perspective to most and this can get me into a bit of trouble.
My directness can easily offend.
The other day I was in a cafe and the waitress poured water all over my phone, and I mean ALL OVER. I quickly pulled my phone out of the puddle and grabbed every napkin on the table to try to save it. The waitress was incredibly apologetic and I said “and I thought I was a bimbo”. This was not meant to be offensive… if anything I thought I was kind of putting my self down a bit, to make her feel better. When she left the table my friends pulled me aside and told me how rude I was. They told me that I had called her a bimbo and that I was really rude. I was surprised. I apologised to the waitress when she returned but she confirmed that she was indeed a bimbo and was not offended.
A while back I was at a reunion and when someone asked me and a friend why we hadn’t aged a day since school my response was “because we did’t have children”. I meant it in a flippant funny way as I didn’t really have a true answer… I was later told how rude I was and that by saying that I was basically telling them that they had aged badly. I did not intend to be a big meany… It was just a throw away comment.
I do not intend to offend but I do have a knack for accidenlty offending.
I say stuff in a flippant and jovial way that can get taken as being mean, rude or bitchy. I swear this is not intentional. I guess I don’t have much of a filter. Perhaps this is one of the reasons I work (mostly) from home LOL.
So unless I look really mad, I’m not being rude or mean. I would like to think that the difference is obvious but I have been told, time and time again that it is not.
Sorry, not sorry!

#WhatILearntThisWeek
This feels a bit hard to write. As a natural-born feminist I really believe that women and men – although different – are equal. For me feminism = equality… nothing more and nothing less. I feel as if I am betraying my feminist ideals to admit that I don’t feel as safe and strong as I seem to.
It is interesting to watch my beautiful niece grow up and realise that what I consider acceptable for me to tolerate I don’t think is acceptable for her to have to deal with. Seeing this paradox through the lens of what I want for her life has clarified a lot of things for me.
Women have to think about their safety… a lot (at least in my experience and from what I have gleaned from discussions with my friends). I started thinking about this and took mental notes of how often it pops into my mind… and it happened a lot more often than I thought it would.
Let me clarify by saying that I am NOT talking about jumping at shadows and freaking out all the time – it’s a calm and rational assessment of my current surroundings and looking for signs of danger.
I’m not saying that men don’t feel unsafe… I can’t speak for them, but it’s something that women have to think about in a calm and rational way, ALL THE TIME. Some women don’t even feel safe in their own home but that is a whole other issue.
Our society seems to think that it’s ok for women to either live in danger or have to be hyper vigilant all the time… but it’s not. There seems to be a new level of hatred and fear brought on by the current boost in the feminist movement with women being threatened online for sharing their views. It’s not ok.
Maybe instead of telling women where they should go, what they should wear and how they should behave perhaps we can teach men to not view women as objects of possession, conquests to be beaten or less deserving of respect and safety.

Winter is coming and I don’t mean in a Game of Thrones kind of way!
The cold has finally started to kick in… although winter doesn’t officially start for a few more days the big cold usually hits by mid May. April 2016 was the warmest on record and every day in May so far has reached over 20 degrees Celsius. I’m not sure how our elected leaders can continue to deny the existence of global warming as it is abundantly clear to everyone else on earth.
Winter is coming has a secondary meaning for me… like a bear I hibernate for the winter (at least the coldest parts of it). My neurological condition means I cannot wear shoes, socks or any clothing below the knee and going out in the cold causes all sorts of problems including increased attacks and chilblains. I dread winter and while personally I have really enjoyed the freedoms this warmer than average Autumn has afforded me it scares me to think of how much the weather has changed in my lifetime and where it will head to next.
So while there are some nice side effects to this ‘Indian Summer’ it is deeply concerning and it highlights our need to take action against climate change (if it isn’t already too late).
See you on the other side of winter.

what i learnt this week 2016 :: WEEK 16
I have never been a big fan of Malcolm Turnbull. I’ve never thought too much about him at all until he became our Prime Minister.
However, when Malcolm took the Top Job from Tony I was hugely relived (as were most Australians). We let our relief that Tony was gone cloud our vision of what our new fearless leader was or could be. At that time of Malcolm’s ascension I had come around to thinking that maybe he was one of the good guys. It appeared that he had moved to the “centre”, he seemed to believe in climate change and that he would fight for marriage equality.
The honeymoon is over and it seems that Malcolm Turnbull was just pretending and now the real Malcolm has revealed itself to us.
Here are some ways Malcolm Turnbull has let me down:
- Failing to do anything about Marriage Equality despite supposedly backing it for the longest time.
- Deciding to waste taxpayers $ on a non-binding plebiscite for Marriage Equality. Why?
- He has done NOTHING to remedy the impending disaster that is Climate Change. It is barely mentioned and funding for important scientific research including the CSIRO has been dramatically slashed.
- His unflinching support of Peter Dutton after his insensitive and ignorant comments about refugees shows me how out of touch with Australian sentiment he really is.
- He took so long to come up with any economic policies and when he did he announced that he would like to further tax the poor and vulnerable instead of the entitled people and corporations that do their best to avoid tax.
- Malcolm’s proposed changes to Medicare, reduced funding for hospitals and medical procedures is a cruel short term cost cutting exercise that will make access to medical treatment a class issue.
- Cuts to education funding are short sighted and will have long term negative effects – can someone please give Malcolm a copy of Freakonomics!
- Despite spruiking for the great innovation boom he totally fucked up the NBN (that one was a long time coming) – clueless. Also, by cutting funding to research he is sending Australian innovation offshore.
- He clearly has NO IDEA of how ‘the rest of us’ live; he thinks everyone’s parents are going to buy them a house!
- He recently cancelled an afternoon of campaigning after a single mother asked him a few hard questions… I expect our leader to have a thicker skin than that.
My problem with Malcolm is that he pretended to be ‘one of us’ while he was waiting in the wings for his ascension, but once he got the top job he reverted to type. I feel foolish that I ever believed his charade. I hope Australians can clearly see his lack of caring for vulnerable people and how out of touch he is with the average Australian.

We all live in a bit of a bubble and can occasionally fall into a false sense of belief that all people are good and that racism isn’t really a big problem. This happens to me from time to time, as I am a freelancer, mainly work from home and can be a bit of a homebody. This means that I can sometimes forget what the real world is like.
I was at the gym the other day and had a long chat with an older gentleman I hadn’t seen for a while… after the compulsory catch up questions we got a bit political and I mentioned something about my distain for the current round of cuts our government are handing down. I ended my rant with something along the lines of “it seems they have no trouble paying retired politicians thousands of dollars a week in retirement benefits but struggle to justify services to indigenous Australian’s who really need all they help they can get.” I was greeted with a strange smirk I had not seen in a long time… he walked away and cracked up with two other older white gentlemen. They had a good chuckle at my expense and couldn’t no believe that I thought indigenous Australian’s were worthy of our government’s attention.
I was shocked… miffed… surprised… disappointed…bemused!
With all of the controversy last year surrounding Adam Goodes, I was shocked at the outpouring of hatred towards him for standing up to racist slurs. Then late last year David Jones named Adam Goodes as an ambassador and again, I could not believe the disgusting comments that then surfaced on social media in response to the announcement.
It struck me that so many people came out to criticise Adam for showing emotion when speaking of how racism has affected him throughout his life (something that I think would be a bloody awful thing to have to deal with) but then when Mick Fanning cried openly on TV he was lauded as a hero for being man enough to cry. Don’t get me wrong, I love them both but I was struck by the difference in public opinion to basically the same outpouring of emotion from two very strong manly men.
Why are people so uncomfortable or afraid of our indigenous culture? Do Aboriginal people make white Australian’s feel uncomfortable about our dark past and murderous British ancestors (my ancestors are not British but I’m speaking of the Australian majority)? Are white middle aged Australian’s so afraid of what might become of our first Australian’s if they were given the same educational and career opportunities as their white kids? How does this threaten them? their jobs? or their status?
I have no answers this week… just a bunch of questions. I don’t get it.

Good health is something people take for granted, until they have a reason to miss it. It is not until we lose our health or a loved one gets sick and dies that some of us decide to get as healthy as possible. If only the young and healthy had some insight and understanding of how their lifestyle will negatively affect their future.
In my mid thirties I started having nerve pain and weird neurological events… it took many years and many doctors to figure out that something is affecting my nerves but the doctors still can’t figure out what! It’s a bit weird to live under a cloud of uncertainty but I do my best to be the healthiest I can be. I make sure I eat really well, exercise and stay strong despite the pain and inconvenience. While I’m working really hard to stay healthy I see people throwing their good health away and it kind of makes me angry… I want to slap the up the back of the head and let them know how good they’ve got it. I don’t do this, as it never works. It takes pain and sickness and tragedy for some people to ‘get it’ – and even then many don’t.
We can’t control every aspect of our health but there is a lot we can manage and influence. I hope that more people will be aware of what they are doing to their precious and beautiful bodies before it’s too late. Look after it NOW before it’s too late.

Stating the bleeding obvious I know but it’s not until your sleep is compromised that you realise how precious a commodity it is.
There are a lot of articles on The Huffington Post and Buzzfeed about sleep, sharing tips and tricks to get to sleep faster and stay asleep. This is a good indication that a lack of sleep is a widespread issue in the Western world. What are we doing wrong that we are experiencing sleep issues on an epidemic level?
Maybe it’s stress, the blue light emitted by electronic devices, over stimulation from diet, drink and devices, working too hard, not working out enough, snoring partners, sleep disorders… the list goes on and on. Whatever the reason is… you need to figure out a way to fix it.
I usually don’t have much trouble falling to sleep but the quality of my sleep varies immensely… my problem is nerve pain. The pain is different on different days and can really effect the quality of my sleep. I did a sleep study a few years ago and they found out that I wake up (not consciously but medically) 300 times a night but I don’t have sleep apnoea.
It has taken many years but it seems that trying to manage the pain improves my sleep, so I make an effort to take some kind of painkiller an hour or two before bed to make sure I can sleep through the night. This has a positive knock on effect… the more good quality sleep I get the better my pain is and the frequency of my ‘attacks’ is reduced.
I can now see a dramatic change in my pain, functionality and mood after getting a good nights sleep compared to a bad one. My neurological proclivities means that the difference is very obvious for me, but I am sure that it still has a huge effect on everyone else… perhaps it’s just harder for neurologically normal people to notice. So why am I going on about this? Sleep is really important not only for our health but for our state of mind and happiness.
Do whatever you can to get a good nights sleep – naturally of course. Turn off the TV at 10pm… take advantage of Night Shift on your iPhone (there is an android equivalent) to switch off the blue light rays on your phone and tablet (blue light makes you more awake and can negatively effect your sleep)… and eat before 7pm as being full can get in the way of a good nights sleep.
Sleep is king and making sure you sleep enough WILL make you happier… with positive side effects for the people in your life as you’re less likely to be a bitch!

You will be missed.

Perhaps in keeping with last weeks post about privacy and shame… poo is everything.
Everybody poops (sung to the tune of R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts)! It’s a fact. If you don’t poop you will eventually die.
Pooping is as important to life as breathing, eating and drinking enough water… but there is little discussion on the importance of poo. A lot of taboo and shame surround the subject of poo… at least in Australia and the Western world. But EVERYBODY DOES IT! Yet most people act as if it never happens.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we should get rid of cubicles to play canasta and sip cocktails while taking a dump, but we could remove some of the stigma and shed some light on the dark topic.
If more people talked about poo, poop or pooping then maybe people who have difficulties or abnormalities would be able to better identify that something is wrong. Some people are really unwell and would rather die than talk to their doctor about their bad poo situation.
Another important benefit of removing the stigma of talking about poo is that there are so sooo sooooo many funny stories about poo… the world can only benefit from frank discussion about our struggles with our dark passenger (gratuitous Dexter reference there for the fans).
Look after your poo… eat good food to cultivate great poo… do exercise to keep poo on the move… keep track of changes in your poo… buy good quality toilet paper that is responsibly sourced… don’t use ‘flushable’ wipes as they are NOT flushable… talk to your doctor about any significant changes in your pooping habits… more importantly celebrate great poo. There is nothing better than doing an awesome shit and feeling like a million dollars.
Here’s hoping you feel like a million dollars today.

what i learnt this week 2016 :: WEEK 11
#WhatILearntThisWeek
When I say this in my head it’s always sung as if it’s the lyrics to the Divinyls song Pleasure and Pain.
There’s a fine line between privacy and shame, I’ve said it once, I will say it again.
I will however try to explain.
Privacy = a state in which one is not observed or disturbed by other people
Privacy is an important and basic human right. The desire to not be observed or disturbed by other people applies in varying degrees to different people depending on their culture and upbringing. Some people want to do almost everything in private while others seem to need very little privacy at all. While we are generally accepting of this, the problem arises when one person’s lack of privacy offends another.
Shame = a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour
Shame has a place in the wide spectrum of human emotions and we all feel it at times, however there seems to be a lot of shame going around. People shame themselves and more commonly others. Some people believe that their idea of what is ‘proper’ is the only way to exist and they shame others who do not fit into their arbitrary mould.
There is a delicate dance between privacy and shame. We all need privacy but in teaching privacy to people (particularly young people) we can unwittingly teach shame alongside it.
For example, everyone poops but there is a lot of shame connected with the act of pooping. Women in particular pretend they don’t poop and go to great lengths to disguise their natural bodily functions. Lets face it – if you didn’t poop you would die… literally (and I don’t mean literally the way the Kardashian’s use it… I mean the literal use of literally). The same can be said for farting, sex or expression of sexual desire, independence, menstruation, being different, weird toes, third nipples… the list could go on and on.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but if we could keep in mind what our lessons are teaching our young friends then maybe we could minimise the shame speech and be aware of the effects our lessons have on others.
Also, maybe we could all be a bit kinder to ourselves and do our best to not shame ourselves quite so much.
